Red & Black event kicks off school yearEl evento Red & Black inaugura el año escolar

On August 12, the great tradition of Red & Black Day continued, as our district teachers and staff gathered at East High in preparation for the first day of school on August 14.

Many special guests from the community were on hand, including Illinois State Representative Barbara Hernandez, City of Aurora’s Mayor Richard Irvin and Deputy Mayor Chuck Nelson, Aurora Police Chief Kristin Ziman, Dunham Fund board member and Quad County Urban League President & CEO Theodia Gillespie, friend and former educator Arlene Hawks, and many more.

The East High Marching Band kicked off the event with a spirit-filled performance. The Tomcat NJROTC cadets presented the colors, and East High senior Lesly Sauceda provided an incredible rendition of our national anthem. District staff were welcomed back by Board of Education President Annette Johnson, and Dr. Jennifer Norrell provided a vision and focus for the coming school year.

District 131 honored Connie Sanchez, the district employee with the longest continuous time of service (almost 37 years!), as well as Kane County Preschool Teacher of the Year Denise Halleran from O’Donnell Elementary School.

Afterwards, staff visited a health fair set up in the high school atrium. What a fun-filled morning to kick off the new school year! Thank you to all our friends and guests who support our district, cheer us on, and who helped make our Red & Black Day so special.
